Tabard Inn
Tabard Inn is an employee-owned hotel headquartered in Washington D.C. Established in 1922 by Marie Willoughby Rogers, the Tabard Inn stands as the oldest continually operating hotel in Washington, DC. Drawing its name from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, the inn has consistently exuded the charm and hospitality reminiscent of an old English Manor. In its early years, it was a hub for social gatherings and afternoon tea. The property expanded with the incorporation of adjacent townhomes at 1741 and 1737 N St in the late 1920s and early 1930s, creating the Tabard Inn's current footprint. In 1975, the hotel faced an auction initiated by Ms. Rogers' family. The new owners, Edward Cohen, a financial editor at the Washington Post, and his wife Fritzi, a political activist and lawyer, brought a fresh perspective. As the world outside evolved into a bustling, modern, and chaotic place, patrons increasingly found solace in this country inn within the urban city.
In 1993, Tabard Inn became employee owned when they implemented an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). Being an employee-owned organization, employees are given a stake in the hotel’s success. This dynamic uniquely motivates employees to do their best work and provide an exceptional customer experience. The inn's kitchen garnered a reputation of its own, serving as a launching pad for many chefs and cooks who went on to establish their successful restaurants. Behind the art, furnishings, and culinary creations, there is an ever-present labor of love that emanates from all corners of the Tabard Inn.
